Effective Friday, May 24, 2024, the City of Miami will temporarily close four spoil islands: Osprey Island, Morningside Island, Pace Picnic Island (also known as 'Teachers Island'), and Willis Island. This measure aims to prevent contamination and littering in Biscayne Bay and its surrounding areas.

The Miami Police Department and Parks and Recreation Department are working together to raise public awareness about the negative impacts of littering. They will enforce existing laws and regulations during this closure. "This is a temporary measure to evaluate and restore the natural beauty in our City and our waterways," a city official stated. Individuals trespassing on these islands will face arrest, with the Marine Patrol unit implementing zero-tolerance measures against violators.

On March 14, 2024, the City Commission enacted the 'Leave No Trace' legislation. This policy promotes responsible recreation and environmental stewardship on Biscayne Bay while protecting its delicate ecosystem in the long term.

Boaters are advised that the closures are temporary until further notice and should seek alternative destinations. Access to the four spoil islands will be restricted, with signage posted to inform visitors of the closures.
