W. Tennis Finishes atop ITA Southeast Region Rankings

39

The University of Miami women’s tennis team took the top spot in the year-end ITA Southeast Region rankings, as announced Wednesday night.

This is the first time the Hurricanes have finished first since the regions realigned in 2010 and Miami became part of the Southeast. In addition, Miami has now finished top-six in the ITA Southeast Region every year since then, including taking a top-four spot all but twice (2018 and 2021).

The Hurricanes went 19-6 (10-3 ACC) in 2022, reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and finishing ninth in the ITA national rankings. It marked the best year for the program since 2013.

Meanwhile, fourth-year junior Daevenia Achong and fifth-year senior Eden Richardson led the way in the ITA Southeast Region doubles rankings. The NCAA Doubles Championship runners-up finished sixth in the country.

Achong and Richardson, who posted a 29-11 record together, form the second Miami tandem to finish atop the ITA Southeast Region doubles list, including the first since Anna Bartenstein and Bianca Eichkorn in 2011.

The Hurricanes also slotted three singles players in the year-end ITA Southeast Region list. Achong placed sixth, Richardson came in at seventh and sophomore Isabella Pfennig took the No. 10 spot.

This is the first time since regional realignment a trio of Hurricanes have cracked the top 10. In Miami’s last year in the South Region, 2009, Julia Cohen finished first, Laura Vallverdu placed third and Eichkorn came in at ninth.

Achong went 29-13 in 2022, including 19-5 in the top third of the lineup and 12-1 in league play. Richardson registered a 19-5 ledger, finishing 9-9 at the No. 1 position and 3-3 versus top-10 foes. Pfennig notched a 23-15 mark, including a 17-4 record in dual matches, all in the top half of the lineup.
