The following message was sent to the university community Thursday afternoon.
Dear members of the university community,
At FIU, we continue to monitor a low-pressure system that has the potential to develop into Tropical Depression 1 or Tropical Storm Alex. A tropical storm watch has been issued for our area. The system is expected to bring heavy rain, gusty winds and potential flooding to South Florida this Friday and Saturday. University operations are expected to proceed as scheduled.
Please use caution while driving and monitor local media for updates from the National Hurricane Center throughout the next few days. If you see flooding on campus, you may report it to FIU Police at 305-348-2626.
In the event of an emergency, FIU has a communication protocol to keep the community informed about university operations. Please look for emails, follow FIU on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, check FIU News and monitor local media for updates.
Storm preparation may be a new experience for many members of our university community. For tips on what to do, please visit the FIU Department of Emergency Management website or Miami-Dade County’s Hurricane Guide.
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
