St. Thomas University issued the following announcement on Nov. 19.
The St. Thomas University (STU) Men's Swimming team is currently ranked third in the country, moving up two spots from the first poll in which they were fifth. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) releases a Coaches' Top-10 poll every two weeks.
Poll Methodology
Top 10 team ratings will be recommended to the NAIA National Office by a Coaches' Presidential committee. This committee will conduct the Top 10 rating five times during the season.
The Committee will consist of seven current NAIA Swimming and Diving Coaches. The committee will use the most current "top times" as the primary source of ranking.
St. Thomas is diving in headfirst in their first full season of the program. Although the record does not reflect the ranking, the Bobcats have gone up against some of the toughest competition.
After opening the season with a huge victory over first-year program Ave Maria University, 219-37, STU flipped the page and faced the two hardest competitors in the area and in NCAA Division II. University of Tampa and Nova Southeastern University are known to be national contending programs and have each produced national champions.
Jaccob Camp is the Bobcat leader qualifying for nationals in three different distances all in the freestyle stroke. Viktor Koets is right behind qualifying in the 100-yard breastroke. Inigo Marina is another qualifier in the 200-yard breastroke and holds the second fastest time in the NAIA.
The Bobcats are currently competing in the Georgia Small College Championships in Columbus, Georgia where the NAIA National Meet will be held this upcoming season.
Coach Caesar Asadi Quote:
"It's been quite the journey this Fall Semester. To have 40+ new kids come into a brand-new program is no small task, and we definitely have had our share of struggles and growing pains. After seeing how we are closing out the Fall season, our Bobcats are coming into the second half of the first full season making a statement. The jobs just getting started."
