Miami resident 'can't support' a candidate who wants to put a stop to school choice

Miami resident Eric Borazzas thinks "choice is very important" when it comes to families having the ability to pick where their children receive an education.

"I think that if a family has the choice to do so, and they would like to pay the money for that education, then they should have that choice available to them," Borazzas said in an interview with the Miami Courant.

Borazzas owns a marketing company with his wife. The couple doesn't have any children, but both attended Catholic schools. He said the values that were instilled in them are "not replaceable."

However, Vice President Joe Biden, the Democratic presidential nominee, has reportedly pledged to stop school choice programs should he win the election this November. A move like that would rip scholarships away from more than 130,000 Florida K-12 students who attend 1,825 private schools across the state and force them to attend public schools, as reported by the Sunshine Sentinel earlier in September. The National Education Association (NEA) has endorsed Biden and wants to do away with such programs that force public school districts to compete with private and charter schools.

"I can't support a candidate that supports that," Borazzas said.

Florida currently has a few school choice programs. They include the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Program and Family Empowerment Scholarships, which are aimed at helping lower-income families an opportunity to attend their school of choice.

Borazzas said he knows how hard his parents worked to put him and his siblings through Catholic school and didn't come without sacrifices, but having that option shouldn't be taken away. He thinks Catholics should be concerned about a possible ban on school choice.

"They want what's best for their child, and they want their child to have a platform to be able to go out and walk into a premier university and get a good-paying job because of it," said Borazzas, "so very important to have that choice."
