City, FPL Break Ground on New Underground Transmission Line

4

City of Miami recently issued the following announcement.

The City of Miami and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) broke ground today on a new underground transmission power line, which will help meet growing energy demands

and enhance service reliability for about 50,000 customers in Downtown Miami and surrounding areas.

“Miami – and specifically our Downtown – continues to see incredible growth in terms of new residents, new businesses and new development,” said Mayor Francis Suarez. “We

welcome FPL’s timely investment in fortifying our power supply and doing so in a way that has the least possible impact on our neighborhoods.”

The new underground transmission line will run underground along the Metrorail corridor from FPL’s Coconut Grove Substation to a location near its Simpson Substation in Brickell.

FPL will also build its new Dolphin Substation in the area to help serve more customers with reliable energy.

“We are excited to work with the City of Miami on this new underground transmission line that will help us further strengthen and enhance our system and provide reliable service

for our customers for years to come,” said FPL Senior Vice President of Power Delivery Manny Miranda. “It’s part of our commitment to deliver America’s best energy value – clean,

affordable and reliable energy our customers can count on in good weather and bad.”

The project’s unique location in an area with existing underground lines allows FPL to connect to existing equipment and provide the City of Miami additional savings while

delivering reliable energy for customers.

Construction for the underground transmission line is expected to be completed in December 2023. FPL is committed to working safely and respectfully in the community before,

during and after the project, and will provide updates to customers and the community as needed throughout construction. For more information on the project, customers may call

800-693-3267.
