Third-year STU law students Daniela Curiel and Douglas Duggan (Team 45) were semifinalist award winners at the 22nd Annual ABA Law Student Tax Challenge (LSTC) competition in San Diego, California, hosted at the 2023 Midyear Tax Meeting, February 9-11, 2023. The team’s written submissions and oral presentations on complex tax law topics placed them among the top 6 national best J.D. school teams, earning them a rank of 4th national best after the oral competition rounds. Tax Law Professor Francoise Blanco sponsored the STU Law J.D. team, leading them to success through the final oral rounds.

This year, 62 teams from 44 schools entered the written competition within the J.D. and LL.M. divisions. The J.D. and LL.M. finalist rounds were held at the 2023 Midyear Tax Meeting at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, where the students were flown and received by the ABA Tax Section.

STU Law alums Amalia Castro (’22) and Justin Welsh (’22) earned national 2nd place in the LL.M. round and best-written submission on behalf of Northwestern Law Tax Program.

The Law Student Tax Challenge is a national tax planning competition sponsored by the Young Lawyers Forum (YLF) of the Section of Taxation. The LSTC allows students to demonstrate their acquired knowledge and interact with experienced practitioners and judges. In the competition’s twenty-two-year history, the LSTC has become one of the largest tax competitions for law students in the United States.
