Hot First Quarter Starts Sparks Ninth Straight Win of the Season

St. Thomas University Women's Basketball (9-0, 4-0 SUN) hit the road for the annual Georgia road trip. Game one featured a matchup against the Mariners of Coastal Georgia (1-9, 0-3 SUN) in the Coffin Gym on Thursday evening. The Bobcats continue to stretch the hottest streak to open the season in the Candace Walker Era with their ninth straight victory.

St. Thomas started the game with a 9-0 run through the first media timeout. Coastal Georgia did not make their first basket until there was 4:55 on the clock in the first. Mya Victor continues her defense presence off the bench coming in and grabbing two steals in back-to-back possessions for the Mariners. Connieya Bradford was in control of the point picking up two blocks and denying the inside game for CCG. The defense forced seven turnovers on seven steals.

The second quarter started with a 21-5 scoreboard lean to the visitor's side. Kasey Gagan knocked down the first basket with a shot from behind the arc to keep the momentum going. St. Thomas broke it open to a 21-point lead in the second halfway through the second. Gagan ended the first half with 10 points as the Bobcats took it 37-19 into the half.

Fellow UMBC teammate, Mya Moye joined in on the offensive push with Gagan scoring five points off the bat in the third quarter. Brooke Bogatz has also found a rhythm scoring in double-digits in back-to-back games. Bogatz and Gagan had done their job and headed to the bench for the final frame and finished off their day in the top of the scoring leaderboard.

The fourth quarter had a lot of help from the bench and there was not much drop off with Victor and Jayde Johnson stepping in to fill the offense. Victor had 11 points off the bench in 20 minutes with eight rebounds and five steals. Bradford finished the game with a career-high four blocks with just 14 minutes of play.

Mya Moye finished the contest with 21 points and nine rebounds. This is the fifth game that Moye scored in double figures this season. Gagan finished with 17 points a rebound and two assists. Bogatz ended with 12 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

St. Thomas will look ahead to game two of the Georgia trip taking on Thomas in Thomasville, Ga. on Saturday, December 5 at 2 p.m.
