Volleyball Comes From Behind To Beat Palm Beach Atlantic

The Barry Buccaneers came from behind down 0-2, to defeat the Sailfish of Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday night in Rubin Arena. The Bucs improve to 14-1 (7-1 SSC).

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

Records: Barry (14-1, 7-1 SSC), PBA (8-7, 3-5 SSC)

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | The Sailfish got off to a early 8-6 lead. Barry came back to knot the score at 10-10. PBA then scored eight in a row to go up 18-10. The Bucs went on a run of their own, scoring five straight to make the score 18-15. The Bucs comeback run came short as PBA secured the first set win. Diana Akopova recorded six kills in the set. Jeyhlen Thomas and Akopova both recorded two blocks defensively.  | PBA 25, Barry 22
  • 2nd set | The Bucs got off to a 11-7 lead to start the set. The Sailfish knotted it up at 13-13 about midway through. With the score tied at 22-22 toward the end, PBA scored the last four out of six points to secure another set. Akopova led with seven kills and Mariana Bertrán chipped in with four kills. The three service errors for the Bucs made the difference in the set. | PBA 26, Barry 24
  • 3rd set | The Bucs went down again early 5-2. However, the Bucs fought back and scored seven in a row to make it 9-5 Bucs. The Bucs used the momentum to keep a comfortable lead for the remainder of the set and start their comeback run. Akopova added nine kills while Djuly Schmorantz also added five. Mónica López added eight digs to lead the defense. | Barry 25, PBA 19
  • 4th set | The beginning of the set was tighly contested until PBA used a run to go up 13-9. The Bucs regrouped and took a lead of 20-16. The Sailfish fought back and tied it at 22-22. The Bucs scored three of the next four points to keep their comeback hopes alive. The Bucs six blocks in the set was the difference. Courtney Zwikker led the way with two of her own.  | Barry 25, PBA 23
  • 5th set | The Bucs got off to a hot start, going up 3-0. The Sailfish came back to knot the score at 5-5. Shortly after, the Bucs went up 11-8 after scoring four in a row. PBA was resilient and tied it once again at 12-12. The Bucs scored three of the last four points to secure the huge comeback victory. Akopova led the way with seven kills, including the last two, to win the match. | Barry 15, PBA 13
NOTEWORTHY:

  • Akopova totaled a season-high 36 kills. The last time a Barry player had 36 kills in a match was when Julia Teixeira had 36 against Lynn on Nov. 18, 2010, in a 5-set loss in the Regional Tournament.The 39.5 points for Akopova in the match is tied for the second highest total in Barry history. Camilla Pagnan had 39.5 points in a 5-set loss at Saint Leo on Nov. 15, 2008. Camilla Pagnan also had 42.5 points against Northern Michigan in a 5-set win on Aug. 25, 2007. 
  • Borcic totaled 63 assist, which led to a team hitting percentage of .258. The last time an individual had 63 assist in a match for Barry was Jasmine Serna on Nov. 13, 2015, in a 4-set win against Embry-Riddle. 
  • Thomas added seven blocks, to lead the Bucs. 
  • Luana Bulara had 23 digs on the match. 

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs will return home on Friday, Oct. 7, to play Florida Southern in the Health & Sports Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m
