Become a full-time bus operator and earn a $5,000 bonus

Join Miami-Dade County’s Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) as a full-time bus operator and earn $5,000 bonus. Bus operator trainees will earn $15.95 per hour and after successfully completing the training program, will earn $16.81 per hour to start, plus built-in overtime.

Sign-on bonus: $2,500 paid after acceptance, enrollment, and completion of DTPW Bus Operator Training Program and six (6) months of successful performance; remaining $2,500 paid after 18-months of successful performance as a DTPW Bus Operator.

How to get hired

Joining the DTPW team as a bus operator is simple. Follow the steps below to begin your journey and be a part of the team that moves Miami-Dade.

Step 1: Apply!

Visit miamidade.gov/jobs to apply. Search for the open “bus operator” position.

Step 2: Get screened.

If your application meets the qualifications, human resources will contact you to discuss next steps. The following are the minimum requirements to become a bus operator for DTPW:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess proof of having passed the General Knowledge for a class “B” vehicle with air brakes and Passenger Endorsement Testing of the CDL (all documents need to be current and valid)
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts and locations as assigned.
Step 3: Pre-employment.

Applicants must successfully complete the following before moving onto the next phase of employment:

  • Background check
  • Written exam -- be sure to check your PeopleSoft account for exam details
  • Pre-employment physical exam
Step 4: Start driving.

New hires will participate in an 9-week training program before getting on the road with passengers.
