NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine to Make History

3

It isn’t every day you get to make history.

But that’s exactly what the students in NSU’s Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine (NSU MD) are about to do. That’s because they are members of the college’s inaugural graduating class.

“We’ve come a long way in four years, and I couldn’t be prouder of what our students, faculty and staff have accomplished,” said Johannes Vieweg, M.D., FACS, the founding dean of NSU MD. “We only get one chance to have the first-ever graduation ceremony, and I’m excited to see our students follow their dreams and become doctors.”

This is an awesome story opportunity about a group of students and a medical school that the entire South Florida community can be proud of – and you have the chance to be part of history, too, by helping tell the story of the NSU MD inaugural class.

The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 13 at the Rick Case Arena in the Don Taft University Center, SW 75th Ave, Davie (NSU’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus.)

To help, we have identified three outstanding students who can be part of your story:

  • one student is a South Florida native from Hialeah, where he’s heading after graduation to fulfill his dream to give back to his community;
  • one has a unique story as he was once a tattoo artist before deciding to return to school; and
  • one is a first-generation student who was in her 30s before making her way to medical school.
They are ready to participate in interviews – we’ve done all the “leg work for you,” just come to campus and we’ll get you all set to tell the NSU MD story!

Other colleges that are participating in the commencement ceremony that day along with NSU MD include:

  • Shepard Broad College of Law;
  • College of Dental Medicine;
  • Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine; and
  • Dr. Pallavi Patel College of Health Care Sciences.
There are 46 students who will be graduating from NSU’s Collage of Allopathic Medicine (MD) – and this charter class will join the 224 graduates from NSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) to help alleviate the physician shortage crisis that is facing both Florida and the nation. NSU is one of only four colleges/universities in the nation to have both an M.D. and a D.O. medical school and is the first and ONLY university in Florida that grants both of these degrees.
