St. Thomas University recently issued the following announcement.
The St. Thomas Women's Flag Football team announces their 2022 slate under the direction of Head Coach Erick Burzanko. The team is heading into its second season of competition after being one of the first to kick off the sport last year.
It was an incredible inaugural year as the Bobcats finished as the Sun Conference Tournament Runner-Ups. Jada Graham and Kayla Alvarez were the highlight as Graham was named Co-Player of the Year and Alvarez was named Co-Champion of Character. The team finished third at the NAIA National Tournament.
"I'm feeling optimistic and excited going into year two," stated Coach Burzanko. "We have a lot of potential with our newcomers that can come in and contribute right away, their mix with the talent we had last year seems to be a recipe for success."
Year two welcomes a new face to the Sun Conference schedule in Thomas University from Thomasville, Ga. This brings the total teams that sponsor the sport in the conference to six. Joining St. Thomas in their second season appearance is Florida Memorial, Keiser, Warner, and Webber International.
Conference play is made up of ten-games play each team in a home and home series.
The Bobcats will open the season on February 18 hosting Midland University. The team will then travel up to Babson Park to play their only tri-match of the year against Warner and host Webber International on February 19. Webber international was the regular season runner-ups last season for the conference, the Bobcats defeated the Warriors in the semifinals of the tournament.
St. Thomas will then host two straight conference games, first up is Thomas on February 26 with Florida Memorial next on March 5.
The Bobcats will then hit the road for two games to play the defending Sun Conference Regular season and Tournament Champions, Keiser on March 10. The team will then take a short break and return at the end of the month on the 24th to head up to Thomasville, Ga.
The final stretch of the regular season has the Bobcats hosting three of the last four at home. Back-to-back Thursday matchups welcomes Central Florida foes, Warner and Webber International.
The schedule rounds out with two South Florida matchups first up is at neighborhood opponent, Florida Memorial. The finale is against Keiser at home on Saturday, April 23.
"You can expect a hungry group that wants to prove we belong at the top, added Burzanko when asked on the expectations of the season. "We got a little taste of the pie last year but this year we want the whole thing. Expect to see some different faces but the same goal in now raising the standard from what was built with the inaugural team."
The Sun Conference Tournament is set for Saturday, April 30, with the host location going to the regular season champion. Postseason continues with the NAIA Postseason Tournament on the following Saturday, May 7, with the location still to be determined.
