Last week, Representative María Elvira Salazar of Florida’s 27th Congressional District sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, calling for continued and multi-year funding for the Teaching Health Centers Graduate Medical Education (THCGME) program. This program trains doctors and dentists who work in communities with high medical needs, including areas in Miami.
Representative Salazar has taken a leading role in advocating for the THCGME program’s funding within Congress. She stated, “Healthcare must continue to be accessible to all who need it. Teaching Health Centers produce the next generation of doctors and dentists who become trusted members of our community. It is essential that these services continue.”
The appeal highlights the urgency of securing financial support for Teaching Health Centers. The THCGME program has enjoyed bipartisan backing for over ten years and is unique as the only federal initiative focused on training future physicians directly in community settings instead of hospitals. Ensuring prompt resolution of funding issues is seen as crucial, particularly because it affects recruiting efforts at these centers each fall.
Supporters argue that Teaching Health Centers play a key role in providing quality care locally and help lower overall healthcare costs.
