Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, addressed Mexico’s relationship with Venezuela and Cuba in a series of tweets posted on December 17, 2025. The comments were made following a hearing by the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere.

In her first tweet, Salazar emphasized the importance of the U.S.-Mexico relationship and delivered a message to Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. On December 17, she wrote: “Mexico is our closest neighbor, and neither of us is going anywhere.

Today, during the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere hearing, I sent a clear message to President Claudia Sheinbaum: history is watching. Stop enabling dictators in Venezuela and Cuba.”

Salazar followed this post with a link-only tweet at nearly the same time: “https://t.co/TxdpqQiy4J”.

Nuestro hemisferio necesita”, reiterating her call for Mexico to reconsider its support for governments in Venezuela and Cuba.

Salazar’s remarks come amid ongoing concerns in Washington about political developments in Latin America. As chairwoman of the subcommittee responsible for oversight of U.S. policy toward countries in the Western Hemisphere, Salazar has frequently spoken out about democracy and human rights issues involving regional partners.

Her public statements reflect longstanding tensions between U.S. policymakers and leftist governments in Venezuela and Cuba, as well as scrutiny over Mexico’s foreign policy under President Sheinbaum.
