Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Florida, posted a series of statements on April 9, 2026, advocating for the Dignity Act as a legislative solution to illegal immigration.
In her first post at 16:36 UTC, Salazar emphasized the importance of learning from past legislative failures: “So because we failed do we give up? ABSOLUTELY NOT! The Dignity Act LEARNS from that failure. It is built specifically so history doesn’t repeat itself. The enforcement language is direct and mandatory – not subject to interpretation and MUST BE IMPLEMENTED.”
She continued in another post at the same time, drawing a distinction between previous efforts and her proposed legislation: “That’s the difference. It’s precisely because the 1986 bill failed that we know the exact language now to do what should have been done decades ago. This is PRESCRIPTIVE enforcement language to implement this. It tells the federal government EXACTLY what to do.”
Salazar concluded her thread by stating her belief in the effectiveness of her proposal: “If you actually want to end illegal immigration once and for all, codified in US law, this is the way. The ONLY way.”
The Dignity Act referenced by Salazar is an immigration reform bill she has introduced in Congress that aims to address border security and provide a legal pathway for undocumented immigrants currently residing in the United States. The act was designed with lessons learned from previous legislation such as the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which provided amnesty but was widely criticized for failing to stop future unauthorized immigration due to weak enforcement provisions.
