The Brothers to the Rescue shootdown occurred on February 24, 1996. Two civilian aircraft operated by Brothers to the Rescue—a Miami-based group assisting Cuban refugees—were shot down by Cuban Air Force MiG fighters over international waters. The attack resulted in the deaths of four members of the organization. The incident drew widespread condemnation from U.S. officials and contributed to heightened tensions between Cuba and the United States.
The posts from Rep. Salazar reflect ongoing efforts among South Florida lawmakers and community leaders to commemorate those killed in the incident and to maintain public awareness about its impact on families and U.S.-Cuba relations.
