U.S. Representative María Elvira Salazar hosted a First Responders Recognition Ceremony in Miami on May 8, honoring the service of law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, and emergency personnel from South Florida.

The ceremony highlighted the importance of first responders in keeping communities safe and addressed the need for continued support and resources for those working on the frontlines. The event also emphasized Salazar’s commitment to advocating for public safety measures in Congress.

“Today, we recognize the extraordinary men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities,” said Rep. Salazar. “Our first responders are the ones who show up in moments of crisis without hesitation, putting service above self to keep South Florida families safe. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment deserve more than our gratitude. They deserve real support, strong resources, and leaders who will always have their backs. That is exactly what I will continue fighting for in Congress.”

Salazar has supported several legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening public safety and supporting first responders. These include championing the Honoring Our Fallen Heroes Act—now enacted through the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act—to expand federal support for families of first responders affected by service-related cancers; advocating for safer protective gear through the PFAS Alternatives Act; backing grant funding programs like the Invest to Protect Act; supporting improved access to emergency equipment via the Lifesaving Gear for Police Act; co-leading legislation such as the SERVICE Act to help veterans facing mental health crises; advancing anti-trafficking measures; and promoting homeownership opportunities with legislation like the HELPER Act.

In addition to legislative work, Salazar has helped secure millions in federal funding aimed at modernizing emergency response capabilities across South Florida.

Salazar represents Florida’s 27th Congressional District and said she remains committed to strengthening public safety efforts throughout her district.
