Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 27th district, commented on the recent designation of Roberto Clemente Guevara Gómez, director of prisons in Nicaragua, as a key figure responsible for human rights abuses under the Ortega-Murillo regime.
On February 18, 2026, Salazar wrote: “A key enforcer of the Ortega-Murillo regime’s brutality has been named and held accountable. The designation of prison director Roberto Clemente Guevara Gómez exposes the machinery behind the torture, repression, and abuse of political prisoners.
Ortega needs to realize the game https://t.co/n9WNA0Vg0A“.
In a separate post published at nearly the same time in Spanish, Salazar stated: “Un ejecutor clave de la brutalidad del régimen Ortega-Murillo ha sido desenmascarado y señalado. La designación del director de prisiones Roberto Clemente Guevara Gómez expone al mundo la maquinaria de tortura, represión y abuso contra los presos políticos.
Que le quede claro a”.
She also shared a third post linking to an external resource on February 18, 2026: “https://t.co/Pe3IpvoRTQ”.
The statements from Rep. Salazar come amid ongoing international scrutiny of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo’s administration. Human rights organizations have repeatedly documented allegations of systematic repression against political opponents in Nicaragua since large-scale protests erupted in 2018. Prison conditions and treatment of detainees have drawn condemnation from groups such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. In recent years, targeted sanctions and public designations by foreign governments have sought to hold individuals accountable for reported abuses within Nicaragua’s penal system.
Rep. Salazar has previously spoken out on issues related to democracy and human rights in Latin America as part of her legislative agenda in Congress.
