Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 27th congressional district, published a series of posts on October 7, 2025, addressing both the anniversary of a deadly attack against the Jewish community and the ongoing government shutdown.
In her first post, Salazar commemorated the victims of the October 7 attack, stating, “Today, we remember the merciless violence unleashed on the Jewish people on October 7. We will never forgot the 1,200 lives taken, mainly civilians, and over 250 others who were taken hostage in the single-worst slaughter of Jewish people since the Holocaust. We stand with” (posted on October 7, 2025).
Later that day, Salazar commented on the federal government shutdown, criticizing the opposing party: “The Democrats have thrown our government into chaos. This shutdown is wasteful political theater that hurts hardworking Americans and puts our nation’s stability at risk. We need leadership that puts people over politics.” (posted on October 7, 2025).
The attack referenced by Salazar took place on October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched an assault on Israel resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostages. This incident has been widely reported as the deadliest single-day massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.
Government shutdowns in the United States occur when Congress fails to pass appropriations legislation funding federal government operations and agencies. Such shutdowns can disrupt services and have broad impacts on federal employees and public programs.
