Miami Dade College in Florida allocated $439,491 to its women’s basketball teams in 2024, which is $508,285 less than the state average spending of $947,776, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
This represented 11.7% of Miami Dade College’s total sports team spending in 2024.

Basketball ranks among the most popular college sports in the United States along with football, with leading NCAA programs attracting fan bases and TV audiences on par with those of the NBA. Events such as March Madness draw millions of viewers each year.
College sports are experiencing significant change in athlete compensation after a federal settlement enabled schools to share revenue directly with players for the first time. The settlement also requires the NCAA to pay $2.8 billion in back damages over the next decade to athletes who played beginning in 2016.
As of 2022, following lengthy legal and legislative action, athletes were also granted the right to earn money from their names, images and likenesses under new NCAA rules and various state laws.
The NCAA reported about $900 million in revenue from media rights linked to March Madness and the Division I men’s basketball tournaments in fiscal 2024, making basketball the main revenue driver for the organization.
