Miami Dade College allocated $476,144 to its men’s basketball teams in 2024, which is $979,750 lower than the state average expenditure of $1,455,894, according to the U.S. Department of Education.
This figure represented 12.7% of the college’s total sports team spending for 2024.
Since 2010, Miami Dade College’s overall sports spending has grown by 87.9%.
Basketball remains a leading college sport in the United States along with football, drawing significant fan interest and television ratings comparable to the NBA. March Madness and similar tournaments attract millions of viewers annually.
College sports programs have entered a significant era of athlete pay after a federal settlement permitted direct revenue sharing between schools and players for the first time. The agreement also compels the NCAA to distribute $2.8 billion in back pay over 10 years to athletes who took part from 2016 onward.
In 2022, following sustained legal action and state legislation, college athletes gained the ability to earn compensation from their names, images and likenesses following changes to NCAA policies and state laws.
The NCAA earned approximately $900 million in media rights from the Division I men’s basketball tournaments, including March Madness, for the 2024 fiscal year, designating basketball as the highest revenue source for the NCAA.
