Men’s Soccer Unable to Battle LWC Offensive Rain in NAIA National Tournament

After 19 hour and five minutes of total weather delay, the St. Thomas Men’s Soccer team (11-2-5, 5-0-2 SUN), could not weather the storm of offense from Lindsey Wilson College (12-6-4). On Tuesday afternoon, the start of the Opening Round at the NAIA National Tournament Final Site began, but it did not conclude until Wednesday morning.

The game had an hour and forty-minute lightning to delay the start. St. Thomas had a hot start with lots of offensive pressure on the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson however was able to strike first in the 19th minute to take a 1-0 advantage. The lead doubled six minutes later with a risky foul inside the box from STU to deny a breakaway but led to a penalty kick that just got by Franco Acerbi.

The offense continued on both sides but only the Blue Raiders were able to find the back of the net. LWC scored two more goals before the half ended to take a 4-0 lead into the break. The break would last 17 hours and 25 minutes as the rain continued to fall at the Jack Allen Soccer Complex.

St. Thomas defense locked in for the second half allowing just three shots, none on goal and just giving up one corner kick. On the offensive end the pressure poured on with 12 shots, three on goal. In total, STU out-shot LWC 23-8 with 8-4 on goal. STU also had a nine to three corner kick advantage.

Guido Cacciabue led the way with seven shots, Hernando Suarez was right behind with four. This was just the fourth time this season that the Bobcats were held scoreless and just the third time the defense has allowed more than one goal.

This concludes the red banner search and season for St. Thomas.
