Rep. María Elvira Salazar, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 27th congressional district and a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, addressed recent actions on religious liberty and immigration reform in a series of social media posts.
On February 4, 2026, Salazar posted about her efforts at the House Foreign Affairs Committee to address the Nicaraguan government’s record on religious freedom. She wrote, “Today at the @HouseForeignGOP, I held the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo accountable for its assault on religious liberty. The United States is sending a clear message: religious freedom will be defended across the hemisphere.”
The following day, Salazar announced her participation in an event focused on immigration policy. On February 5, she stated, “Today, I’ll be joining advocates and impacted Americans to reveal new national data showing how U.S. citizens in mixed-status families are being harmed by our broken immigration system, and why the DIGNITY Act is the solution.” In a subsequent post that same day, she shared a link to watch the event live: “https://t.co/EYae7fF0C8”.
Nicaragua has faced international criticism for restricting religious freedoms under President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo’s administration. Reports have documented government actions against clergy members and faith-based organizations since widespread protests began in 2018.
The DIGNITY Act is bipartisan legislation introduced by Rep. Salazar aimed at providing legal status for undocumented immigrants while strengthening border security measures. The bill has been positioned as an alternative approach amid ongoing debates over comprehensive immigration reform in Congress.
