Rep. María Elvira Salazar, U.S. Representative for Florida’s 27th congressional district, posted a series of tweets on November 19, 2025, addressing human rights abuses in Cuba and announcing her support for new data protection legislation.
In a tweet posted at 15:05 UTC, Salazar wrote: “Donaida Pérez’s case exposes the true face of the Cuban dictatorship, a regime that punishes, tortures, and silences anyone who dares to think freely. The systematic abuse of political prisoners by the Castro–Díaz-Canel regime is an atrocity. It must END NOW.”
Later in the day at 17:18 UTC, Salazar shifted focus to legislative matters regarding investor data security. She stated: “Glad to co-sponsor the SEC Data Protection Act of 2025, a commonsense, much-needed safeguard to protect the sensitive investor data held by the SEC. Without the strong protections in this bill, our capital markets and our entire economy are vulnerable. We must do everything”.
Salazar has been an outspoken critic of human rights violations under Cuba’s current government led by Miguel Díaz-Canel and has previously advocated for greater international attention on cases like that of Donaida Pérez—a Cuban activist reportedly imprisoned for her opposition activities. Human rights organizations have documented ongoing concerns about repression and treatment of political prisoners in Cuba.
Her mention of co-sponsoring the SEC Data Protection Act comes amid increased scrutiny over cybersecurity vulnerabilities affecting financial regulators and institutions across the United States.
