Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Congresswoman representing Florida’s 27th district, addressed the ongoing government shutdown and foreign policy actions in a series of posts on October 6, 2025.
In her first post, Salazar criticized the federal government’s current impasse: “Washington’s political games are hurting American families. Every day this shutdown drags on, paychecks are missed, bills pile up, and faith in government fades. Enough is enough. Let’s stop the brinkmanship, open the government, and get back to serving the people!” (October 6, 2025).
She reiterated her concerns in Spanish later that morning: “Los juegos políticos en Washington están golpeando directamente a las familias estadounidenses. Cada día que continúa este cierre, se pierden salarios, las cuentas se acumulan y la confianza en el gobierno se desvanece. ¡Ya basta! Pongamos fin a las maniobras políticas,” (October 6, 2025).
Later that day, Salazar shifted focus to international affairs and Venezuela: “I applaud the Trump administration for destroying Maduro’s narco-trafficking boats on its way to poison our streets. Maduro is not Venezuela’s legitimate head of state. The Trump administration is right to treat him like the cartel boss he is and use every hellfire missile” (October 6, 2025).
Government shutdowns have historically led to disruptions in public services and delays in federal employee paychecks as negotiations stall over budgetary issues or policy disagreements between parties.
The United States has not recognized Nicolás Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate president since early 2019; instead supporting opposition leader Juan Guaidó amid allegations of electoral fraud and human rights abuses by Maduro’s regime.
