Rep. María Elvira Salazar, a U.S. Representative from Florida, recently addressed issues related to Cuba’s political future and China’s growing influence in Latin America through a series of posts on her official Twitter account.
On April 16, 2026, Salazar wrote, “The Cuban people deserve freedom, not another deal to keep the same regime in power. I made it clear: no negotiations with the Castro family to preserve a dictatorship. The future of Cuba must be decided by its people, not a dynasty.” She expressed her opposition to any negotiations with the Castro family and called for the Cuban people’s right to determine their own government.
Later that day, she highlighted concerns about China’s activities in Latin America. On April 16, 2026, she stated, “For years, China has been expanding its footprint in our hemisphere, and now it’s a direct threat to our homeland. I’ve been warning about this for years. A massive dual-use port in Peru puts potential Chinese military power at our doorstep. We cannot afford to ignore it.” Salazar warned that China’s involvement in infrastructure projects like the port in Peru could pose security risks for the United States.
Commemorating an important historical event, Salazar posted on April 17, 2026: “Today marks the 65th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs. The world must remember the fateful day hope was left behind on Cuba’s shores, and the bravery of those involved. But that wasn’t the end of the story. We carry that history with us, and we keep pushing forward. The fight” In this message, she referenced the failed Bay of Pigs invasion—a pivotal moment in U.S.-Cuba relations—and emphasized ongoing efforts for change.
Salazar has been outspoken on both Cuban affairs and concerns regarding China’s influence in Latin America. Her statements reflect ongoing debates among U.S. policymakers over foreign policy toward authoritarian regimes and strategic competitors.
