Learn about the new requirements for septic system installation and maintenance

0Comments

A new ordinance regarding requirements for the maintenance of septic systems, also known as On-Site Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS), has been adopted and will be effective January 1, 2023.

The ordinance creates tiered OSTDS design standards based on factors such as sewage flow rates and proximity to environmentally sensitive areas and requires the implementation of performance-based OSTDS technology for all new OSTDS installations and existing OSTDS requiring replacement.

These new requirements will result in greater on-site sewage treatment performance with enhanced levels of pollutant reduction and will be a foundational step towards a more resilient community and a healthy and thriving Biscayne Bay.

The Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources (RER), Division of Environmental Resources Management, will be hosting workshops for the community.
